Renault reveals F1-inspired concept

25 April 2013

Renault has revealed a one-off concept version of its Twizy model that will be used to show the way in which F1 technology can be translated to road going machinery.

The Twizy Renault Sport F1 features slick tyres from a Formula Renault machine and has also been given a carbon splitter, side-pods and rear wing. Single-seater type mirrors, an F1 type steering wheel and a diffuser, which incorporates the rain light of a Formula Renault 3.5 car, are also present.

The car, which will be displayed by Renault at a number of events over the course of the year, also features a KERS system identical to that used in F1.

Taking the place of the rear seat, the KERS system boosts power from 17bhp from the standard electric motor up to 97bhp and is available for around 13 seconds at a time.

With the limited speed of the electric machine meaning the system can't be recharged under braking, the KERS system on the concept Twizy instead takes its power from the main motor, with the driver then able to chose when to use the extra boost via a button on the steering wheel.

While it provides a 0-62mph time to match the Renault Mégane Renaultsport 265, the actual top speed is a sedate 68mph.

“We always said we wanted to create F1-derived technology that was road relevant!” Jean-Michel Jalinier, President and Managing Director of Renault Sport F1, said. “Hopefully, this Twizy will make a few people smile while also making a serious point.

“The project was led by Renault Sport F1 and Renault Sport Technologies, working in close conjunction with Renault's electric vehicle development department. KERS is a very complex system and integrating it into another electric vehicle was a very serious endeavour, but they managed to make it work, delivering a huge boost of power safely and efficiently.

“I'm not sure we'll be seeing many of these on our roads, but it does show that the same principles we see on the race track can be filtered down to the road legal range – this is just the evil elder brother!”

The first public appearance for the car will be at the World Series by Renault event at the Aragon circuit in Spain this weekend.
