Massa: Qualifying improvement key for Ferrari
20 May 2013
Felipe Massa admits that Ferrari has to work hard to improve despite a strong start to the 2013 F1 season – with particular focus needing to be placed on its qualifying pace.
Two wins for Fernando Alonso mean Ferrari sit second in the constructors' championship behind Red Bull with the Spaniard third in the drivers' championship. Massa meanwhile is two places further back following his first podium of the year in Spain.
Technical chief Pat Fry has made no secret of the fact that the team needs to work hard to improve the F138 and Massa insisted that qualifying was the main area where the Scuderia
could make forward progress.
“Overall, it's been a positive start,” he said. “In some races we did very well, while in others, Bahrain for example, we had a few problems which cost us valuable points. We have seen an all-round improvement this year, from the car to the way the team works and we have shown we are competitive, but clearly we can still improve, especially in qualifying. We are well aware of this and working towards that goal.”
Qualifying will be particularly key this weekend in Monaco during F1's 'Blue Riband' event, but Massa said he felt sure he could be in the mix for a second straight podium finish come race day.
“I like the Monaco track a lot, partly because it's my second home race, given I live there,” he said. “You are always on the limit, very close to the barriers, with no room for error. Grid position is much more important than at any other track and so we hope we can do well right from Saturday. My aim is very simple, to always be in the fight for a podium finish.”
