Allison, Honda link downplayed

13 June 2013

Rumours suggesting that James Allison is to join Honda have been downplayed as mystery continues to surround the future of the former Lotus technical director.

Allison elected to leave his role with Lotus last month and was replaced by Nick Chester, with speculation linking Allison with a move to either Red Bull, McLaren or Ferrari.

Red Bull denied it would be signing Allison earlier this month following a report in the German media that suggested he could seen as a long-term replacement for Adrian Newey.

On the back of that denial, Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat suggested that Allison would in fact be joining Honda to work on a production of a car that could be used to help test its new F1 engine.

That engine is set to be used by McLaren from 2015 onwards, with the Woking-based team denying that Allison would be taking up a role with the Japanese manufacturer prior to the new partnership between team and engine supplier coming into effect.

Honda themselves haven't commented on the story, while Allison – currently on gardening leave following his Lotus departure – having also stayed silent on his future plans.
