Vettel: Hamilton wasn't in reach today
29 June 2013
Sebastian Vettel has admitted that Lewis Hamilton was in a different league during qualifying for the British Grand Prix – and the German even joked that the Englishman must have found a short cut!
Vettel will start the eighth round in the 2013 F1 World Championship from third place on the grid, just ahead of his Red Bull team-mate, Mark Webber.
Vettel's best lap in Q3 was a 1 minute 30.211 seconds, leaving him a massive 0.604 seconds off Hamilton – and 0.152 seconds off Nico Rosberg in second in the other Mercedes W04.
“Either Lewis found a short cut or he has something special round here, it was a phenomenal lap and he wasn't in reach today,” Vettel lamented.
Despite that however, Vettel added he was pleased with his performance: “I was very happy with the lap I did at the end, [although] it was very close with Mark also," he continued.
“We did what we could for the team and it's always nice to position well in qualifying, especially around here – qualifying is good fun and I'm enjoying the high speed corners. We'll see how we get on with the tyres tomorrow and with looking after them.
“I'm happy for the team today [that we locked out the second row], our factory is very close to this track, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow.”
Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner meanwhile has predicted that it should be a thrilling race: “We could see this morning that Mercedes were very fast over a single lap and they've demonstrated that again this afternoon, so congratulations to Lewis on his pole position at Silverstone,” Horner added.
“It was [still] a great performance from both of our drivers [though] with only one hundredth of a second separating them on the second row.
“Hopefully we can give Mercedes a good run for their money tomorrow from there, and I'm sure it's going to be an exciting British Grand Prix”.
