Lowe joining early ‘a bonus’ for Mercedes

30 June 2013

Paddy Lowe's move to Mercedes has led to speculation about the future succession plans of team management but, for the moment, the squad is keen to focus on getting its latest acquisition up to speed with their operation and gain benefit from his arrival.

When asked if Lowe's arrival meant that Ross Brawn would be leaving the team in the near future, director Toto Wolff insisted that 'there is no transition [in management] and Ross is the boss. It's not on our agenda at the minute', but commented on the positives that Lowe will bring.

"Getting Paddy earlier helps us a lot, and he fits in nicely with us," he told Crash.net, "We had a staff meeting last week, and Paddy said that he always respected Ross from their fights in the past. He is giving his opinion and fitting in fantastically."

Brawn also commented on the benefits of Lowe joining early and, with his role currently being to assess the functions of the team, it is clear what can be gained ahead of major technical changes in 2014.

"It was a bonus getting Paddy early," Brawn confirmed, "We've agreed for him to spend the rest of this year looking at how we are operating. He will look at where we are operating at a good level and perhaps where we could improve based on his experience.

“Paddy is an objective and constructive guy, so it's been useful, particularly with the project for next season. He doesn't really have any specific instructions at the moment and is operating at a high level. He sees things we do well and things we need to improve on."

Lewis Hamilton has experience of working with Lowe from McLaren and the 2008 world champion praised his intelligence.

"It's cool to have Paddy here, he's an incredibly intelligent guy and it's nice to have a familar face [in Brackley],” the Briton confirmed, "I started out working with him many years ago and it's really nice to have him in the team. I'm looking forward to working with him again."
