Hamilton: It would have been an easy win

1 July 2013

Lewis Hamilton reckons he could have claimed an 'easy win' at the British Grand Prix, but for his tyre failure.

Hamilton appeared to be in control after making a good start from pole position in front of his home fans.

However, on lap 8, his left-rear tyre let go and he dropped right to the back of the pack.

While he recovered and finished in a very impressive fourth - helped by two safety car periods - the Englishman was still disappointed, and with team-mate, Nico Rosberg winning, it showed the Mercedes was definitely up to the job.

“It was really unfortunate today,” Hamilton told ESPN F1. “The fans have been incredible, the weather's great and it looked like we were on our way to a win. It would have been an easy win really, I had the pace. The car was feeling great and I just had no problems at all, but the tyre blew up.

“But a big congratulations to Nico and the team they've done an incredible job; the car was great throughout the race and I'm just glad that I was able to catch up and get some points.”

Hamilton also went on to add that with another lap he felt he might been able to pass Fernando Alonso and take third.

“The tyre problem was such a shame and from then, it was just a case of giving it my all and battling as far up the field as possible. I had some good overtaking moves and, given another lap, I might have got Fernando and ended up on the podium,” he confirmed in Mercedes' official post-event release.

“[But] everything considered, fourth place is pretty good after having been last on lap 10 and we'll take that,” he concluded.
