Button aiming for Spa podium

31 July 2013

While F1 may have only just entered its summer break, Jenson Button has revealed that he has his eye on a podium finish when the season resumes at Spa next month.

The Briton has endured a tough season to date with just 39 points to his name and a best finish of fifth as McLaren struggles for competitiveness with the MP4-28.

The Hungarian Grand Prix saw Button come through from 13th on the grid to finish sixth and he admitted that the performance in the race was enough to suggest that better things lie ahead in the second half of the season.

“The result is still not what we look for, but we beat a Ferrari and we would have beaten a Mercedes if it hadn't have blown up, so that wasn't too bad,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “The pace we had on the soft tyre was exciting, setting a couple of fastest laps in the middle of the race. So I genuinely believe we have improved the car, and on a circuit I didn't think was quite right for us.

“Going into the summer break we're not too bad, and with a few little updates for Spa we should be looking at a much better result, fighting further forward.”

With McLaren continuing to work on improvements to the car around the enforced summer shutdown, Button said he felt Spa could give him the best chance yet of breaking his podium duck for the year.

“There are new bits that will be on the car for Spa, and I'm sure there will be more we can do in the week when we can work on the car,” he said. “Spa is a low downforce circuit, and what we already have on the car will suit Spa more than Hungary. I still say we should be able to fight for a podium.

"We might get there and it be a definite no no, but it's what I'm aiming for."
