Glock confirmed in BMW role

1 January 1901

BMW Sauber has confirmed the signing of Timo Glock as its second test driver for the 2007 Formula One season.

The 24-year-old German driver, who previously drove for Jordan in a limited campaign back in 2004, completed two test sessions with the BMW team following the conclusion of the season and will take up his new role while also competing in a second season in GP2 for the iSport team – where he will hope to improve on his fourth place finish in 2006.

“I got to know the team during my two test sessions in Barcelona and Jerez and I'm really looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the BMW Sauber F1.07 in 2007,” Glock admitted following confirmation of his role. “Driving a Formula One racing car is quite simply the greatest challenge you can have as a racing driver. Formula One has always been my goal.”

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen was delighted to welcome Glock into the team, although he pointed out that there are no plans for the German to perform any Friday running before a grand prix weekend.

“We've known Timo for a long time already,” he said. “After all, he started out on his formula motor racing career in Formula BMW six years or so ago and won two titles. He's since enjoyed success and gathered experience in various different formulas, including Formula Three, Formula One and the Champ Car series in the US. In 2006 he performed extremely impressively in the exciting GP2 series. He will assist us with our testing work. There are no plans to involve Timo on the Fridays before the races.”
