Ultimate inks Molina for 2009
Ultimate Motorsport are targeting the World Series by Renault title after signing multiple race winner Miguel Molina for their 2009 campaign.
The Spaniard will be entering his third full season in the championship having competed for Pons Racing in 2007 and Prema Powerteam in 2008, endeavours that has seen him win on four occasions.
With a late spurt of form helping him to fourth in the final standings, as one of the highest placed drivers returning to the series in 2009, Molina is likely to be considered one of the big favourites for the title.
Indeed, despite signing for his third different team in as many seasons, the 20-year-old is confident 2009 will prove to be his year.
“I believe that we will form a good team,” he said. “Ultimate Motorsport have already demonstrated in the past year that they have a very good car and in their second season in the World Series, they want to win the championship. It means we share exactly the same objective, because I am competing in this championship again to win it.
“When I visited its facilities I realised the team is very professional, working in different championships and employing around 70 people. I am now looking forward to my first test with them so we can work on reaching our objectives.”
Ultimate Motosport, meanwhile, embark on their sophomore year in the World Series after a hugely successful maiden season in 2008 when Fabio Carbone and Esteban Guerrieri helped them to four wins and the runners-up spot in the overall standings.
No second driver has been confirmed, although Guerrieri, who also raced for the team in British Formula 3, Greg Mansell and Ricardo Teixeira have been linked with the spot.
Molina's announcement means that just over half of the 2009 World Series grid has been confirmed, with one place remaining at Ultimate, Prema, Tech 1 and P1, while Interwetten, KTR, RC and Epilson Euskadi are yet to confirm any drivers.
Pre-season testing begins next week.
