Greg Mansell will return to European racing in 2009 after being signed to complete Ultimate Signature Racing's driver line-up in the World Series by Renault.
Coming just a few days after it was confirmed that Miguel Molina had secured one of the sought after USR seats, Mansell arrives to form an all-new pairing for the Anglo-French concern.
The son of former Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell, Greg continues his steady rise up the motorsport ranks having begun his career in Formula BMW in 2006, before graduating to British Formula 3 in 2007 and then the American-based Champ Car Atlantic series last season.
Although his Stateside jaunt prompted nothing better than a fifth place finish, on the way to tenth in the overall standings, Mansell made enough of an impression on Ultimate during off-season testing at the end of last year to secure a race deal for 2009.
With Molina also bringing race winning experience to USR, who finished second overall on its World Series by Renault debut in 2008, team principal Barry Walsh is anticipating a flurry of wins and podiums this year.
“We are really pleased to announce our World Series by Renault driver line up and with Greg Mansell and Miguel Molina we have a great opportunity to go one better than we did last season,” he said. “Miguel brings a wealth of experience with him and he should be fighting for race wins from the start of the season.
“Greg joins us after testing with us at the end of 2008 and earlier this year, where he immediately impressed us with his speed and his technical feedback to the team. He raced against us in British F3 two years ago where he proved that he was certainly a chip off the old block!
“I'm sure, given the right opportunities, a Mansell will once again be standing on the podium at some of the world's greatest circuits before the end of the year.”
This will be the first season Greg has not raced alongside his brother Leo, who will instead race for Team Modena in sportscars this year.
