Circuit de Catalunya: Vandoorne gave Toro Rosso seat no real thought

Despite reports suggesting otherwise, Stoffel Vandoorne maintains that McLaren have always been his best option, not a proposed 2014 Toro Rosso seat.
Stoffel Vandoorne has confirmed that he was offered the opportunity to replace Daniel Ricciardo at Toro Rosso, instead opting for his long term plan with McLaren.

However he denied any reports that the idea of moving to the Italian outfit for 2014 was an option he considered seriously.

Speaking to, a frustrated Vandoorne claimed that media reports suggesting differently are false.

“There was interest but no meetings were ever had and I did not think about it too much," he said. "Now everyone thinks I said no to Toro Rosso. I spoke to my management and they advised against it so there were no meetings. I gave it no real thought.”

The Belgian further conceded that his position at McLaren does place him behind his main title rival, Kevin Magnussen for a coveted seat with the Woking outfit.

However his fate as their reserve driver rests with Magnussen's chances of obtaining a Formula 1 seat for 2014. For the twenty-one year old, the prospect of a lengthy career in Formula 1 is more appealing than the Toro Rosso alternative.

As for next year, Vandoorne further explained to that his plans were unclear at present but he did not discourage the possibility of GP2.

“I remain focused on this year. I am working with people but we will see. The race today is obviously my priority and I cannot think beyond that. I have no idea what my plans are yet.”

The Red Bull Junior Team is well regarded by many racing paddocks and can name Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo on its impressive alumni list. However few drivers stay with their training team, Toro Rosso, for longer than two years.

Antonio Felix da Costa, considered the most likely contender for the Toro Rosso seat, and Carlos Sainz Jr are their two big names in the World Series this year.

Whilst Vandoorne admits that a deal with Helmut Marko would guarantee him a seat with Toro Rosso, it is not an appealing opportunity.

“I am working with McLaren; they look out for me. I will continue to work with them”, he concluded.
