“I cannot describe how I am feeling”, remarked a relieved Kevin Magnussen, speaking to Crash.net
just minutes after his championship victory in Spain. The Dane revealed that the win helps to cement his Formula 1 charge amidst rumours of a 2014 drive with Marussia.
“It is like taking a monkey from my back. I was told I had to win the championship and I did. I have done all I can do so it feels good. It has been a long time since I won a championship and this year I put it all together”. His last championship was won back in 2008.
Following a heavy sigh, Magnussen then went on to acknowledge the race pace of Will Stevens who finished second in a much-needed return to form with P1 Motorsport.
“He is very quick and he has been all year. He seems to miss a bit in qualifying but in race pace he pushed me all the way to the end. Some drivers deserve to be higher up than they were in the championship.”
Magnussen won in style with one race remaining at the Circuit de Catalunya, something he promises to enjoy.
“Tomorrow will be fun, there's not any pressure; it's a bit of a game. Though I am still aiming for pole; I do not want to think about second or third. I will go flat out for that. We, as a team, still have a championship to win so we will concentrate on that”. Celebrations, he reveals, will have to wait one more day.
“I will begin to think about next season on Monday morning but before then, no. When I get back to my hotel I think I'm going to lie down and try and understand it all”, he continued with a laugh.
His father, Jan, could add to the prize haul this weekend if he wins his class in American Le Mans, something Kevin would love to see.
"I have remained focused on my own championship but for us both to win would very special. I wish him the best of luck".
