Circuit de Catalunya: Heavy fog disrupts qualifying session

Kevin Magnussen takes another pole position under thick fog.
Emerging from thick fog, the final qualifying session for Formula Renault 3.5 got under way at the Circuit de Catalunya, hours after Kevin Magnussen was crowned champion.

Describing this race to as “a game”, Magnussen led from the front, the pressure of the championship now gone. Runner up, Stoffel Vandoorne pushed him throughout the session and never fell below a top five position. However, despite his best efforts, DAMS and Kevin Magnussen remained too strong. This session also saw Arthur Pic return to the form he showed in the early half of this season.

The roar of the 3.5 litre engines did nothing to reduce the fog ultimately leading to a red flag. Qualifying was suspended with 14 minutes still remaining as the visibility was deemed unsafe. The session was later restarted under the glare of the rain lights with just one tenth-of-a-second separating the two front runners.

After one last effort from some drivers, qualifying was halted once more and did not restart. The close fight emerging for the top five positions was cut eight minutes short.

As the red flagged waved, Magnussen took yet another pole position; his eighth of this season. He will be joined by Vandoorne on the front row. Arthur Pic, Will Stevens and Nico Müller complete the top five.

Aware of the circumstances surrounding his pole position, celebrations from Magnussen remained subdued as those around him attempt to end his dominant run of form.
