The second round of the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 championship got under way in Aragon and it was Will Stevens who topped the Friday morning session.
The series veteran improved in the final minute to lead the session, two tenths-of-a-second faster than 2013 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup champion, Pierre Gasly who was the highest-placed rookie in second. His Arden Motorsport's team mate, Will Buller, sat third fastest following a late surge.
Oliver Rowland was over a half a second quicker than his Fortec Motorsports team mate, Sergey Sirotkin and the Briton finished the morning practice fourth, closely followed by championship leader, Carlos Sainz Jr. The long time leader was dethroned in the last few minutes and was unable to improve his time.
Matias Laine was sixth fastest, half a second slower than Stevens, his Strakka Racing team mate. The twenty-four-year-old was closely followed by Marlon Stockinger who could not sustain his impressive early pace. The Filipino driver sat seventh at the close of morning practice.
Jazeman Jaafar, Matthieu Vaxiviere and Zoel Amberg completed a competitive top ten.
Podium finisher from Monza two weeks ago, Sergey Sirotkin was eleventh and was joined by series veteran, Marco Sorensen in the sole Tech 1 Racing model. Meanwhile, rookie Luca Ghiotto was down in sixteenth despite an impressive showing in Monza. His fellow International Draco Racing driver, Pietro Fantin was twenty-first.
The drivers will return to the track in the afternoon for the second practice session to see if Will Stevens can sustain his ever-improving one lap pace.
