Long time leader, Carlos Sainz Jr took his third consecutive pole position of the Formula Renault 3.5 season.
The Spaniard will start on pole position in front of his home crowd as his time of 1:40.418 could not be surpassed. The Red Bull junior produced a commanding flying lap in the latter stages to improve his competitive time.
Oliver Rowland was the highest-placed rookie in second, one hundredth-of-a-second behind the leader. The Briton's qualifying shows great improvement on his fifteenth place grid slot two weeks ago. Series veteran, Nikolay Martsenko sat third fastest for Comtec Racing, a further five hundredths behind the Fortec of Rowland.
Roberto Merhi matched his position in Friday practice to place his Zeta Corse fourth on the grid. The Italian, who has enjoyed an impressive run of form in the early stages of this season, will join Martsenko on the second row whilst Zoel Amberg sits fifth.
Pierre Gasly was the highest placed Arden in sixth with Marlon Stockinger just two tenths behind in seventh place. Pietro Fantin, Sergey Sirotkin and Will Buller completed a competitive top ten. Buller was fastest in Friday practice but struggled to sustain this pace in qualifying.
Norman Nato was over half a second slower than his championship leading team mate, Sainz. The Frenchman will start this afternoon's race from fourteenth on the grid. It was also a tough qualifying session for the Strakka Racing pairing of Matias Laine and Will Stevens who finished down in twelfth and fifteenth respectively.
Carlos Sainz Jr will look to extend his championship lead as he starts on pole position for the first FR3.5 race of the weekend in front of his home crowd.
