The sixth round of the Formula Renault 3.5 championship got under way at the Nurburgring this morning with Sergey Sirotkin leading a Fortec 1-2 to top the timing sheets.
Heavy fog delayed running by two hours and shortened the first practice session by ten minutes. Sirotkin continued his impressive run of form, following his race one win in Mosocw, with his strong showing at the historic German circuit. The Russian's rookie team mate Oliver Rowland was the early leader but finished three tenths-of-a-second behind.
Marco Sørensen put in a strong showing to claim his best one lap result of the season for third. The Tech 1 Racing driver has endured an inconsistent season with the French outfit. Long time leader, William Buller has also struggled to show his 2013 pace thus far but secured a strong fourth place, outpacing team mate, Pierre Gasly who was seventh fastest.
The DAMS Racing pairing were fifth and sixth respectively with championship leader, Carlos Sainz Jr half of a second behind the leader. Luca Ghiotto, Jazeman Jaafar and Oscar Tunjo completed a competitive top ten.
Returning to FR3.5 for the first time since breaking his back in Monaco, Matthieu Vaxiviere sat a commendable eleventh for Lotus. Team mate Marlon Stockinger was down in fourteenth.
Making his FR3.5 debut this weekend, Alfonso Celis Jr was twentieth in the second Tech 1 Racing, just one tenth slower than seasoned racer Will Stevens. Cameron Twynham, also enjoying his first FR3.5 weekend was twenty-second for returning team, Comtec.
