Matthieu Vaxiviere and Marlon Stockinger secured Lotus' most successful weekend of the season during race two at the Nurburgring, finishing second and third respectively.
Vaxiviere's top two placing is his first series podium since debuting at the season opener in Monza. The Frenchman missed the last two rounds after breaking his back during the Monaco support race in May. This weekend marked the nineteen-year-old's return to FR3.5 action.
“We were very fast today but Roberto Merhi didn't make a single mistake”, he said. “I am very happy to come back in this manner!”
Speaking of his career best performance, the series rookie admitted that the notoriously challenging twists and turns of the Nurburgring prevented him from fighting race winner Roberto Merhi for the victory.
“He was hard to catch and it is always difficult to pass on this track”, he confessed. “Nevertheless, I am ecstatic with the second place and I am pleased for the team because Marlon finished third”.
Following their double podium at the historic German circuit, his team mate, Filipino racer Stockinger, spoke of the visible improvements to his 3.5 litre challenger. Prior to this weekend, the Czech outfit had just two 2014 podiums to their credit.
“The team gave me an excellent car this weekend”, said the delighted Lotus junior post-race. “We could always run in the top five but, unfortunately, I couldn't exploit the DRS to its full potential”.
Noting his team mate's return, the twenty-three-year-old applauded Vaxiviere's speedy recovery.
“I am also thrilled about Matthieu's return as we both finished in the points”, he explained. “We are progressing and I hope that it will continue after the summer break”.
The Hungaroring will host the next Formula Renault 3.5 round when the series returns from its lengthy summer break in September. Lotus currently sit sixth in the team standings.
