FR3.5: Silverstone, Le Mans return to FR3.5 2015 calendar

A British round will be reinstated on the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship schedule, with the series returning to Silverstone in 2015.
The World Series by Renault will return to Silverstone and Le Mans in 2015, Renault Sport confirmed at the conclusion of the current season in Jerez.

The British circuit has not appeared on a WSR calendar since 2012 while Le Mans has been brushed aside in favour of Magny Cours an Paul Ricard since the famous endurance track's last appearance in 2009.

Renault Sport Technologies CEO Patrice Ratti, speaking to gathered press, explained the series' decision to return to Silverstone in 2015. He noted the importance of competing at current F1 circuits. The return, he says, would feature a full round of WSR action including Formula Renault 3.5 and 2.0 Eurocup.

“We signed the deal with Derek Warwick on Saturday after three weeks of negotiations,” he said. “The teams wanted to have more British tracks so it feels right.”

Silverstone's entry was first discussed earlier this year but this announcement is the first time Renault has confirmed the news. The circuit demands high costs to run an event but Ratti admits that it is back by popular demand.

“A lot of the teams are based here, many drivers live there and the sponsors too but mostly it is a significant Formula 1 track.”

As for Le Mans, Ratti insisted that a need for change was the only reason behind their decision.

“It's not that we have been unhappy with Paul Ricard but we needed a change and we wanted to use the facilities at Le Mans,” he explained. “It should be good for us and for the series.”

The 2015 season will begin its nine rounds at Motorland, Aragon thus signalling the end of Monza's time on the calendar. The series will then travel to Monaco, Spa, Budapest, the Nurburgring and Spielberg, Austria before its summer break. Returnees Silverstone and Le Mans will host the event in the latter stages of 2015 while Jerez will once again conclude the championship.

Ratti did not discount China as a future stomping ground for the World Series by Renault in the next few years but insisted that cost and logistics were preventing their expansion outside Europe.

The 2015 Formula Renault 3.5 calendar is as follows:

April 25-26: Aragon, Spain
May 24: Monaco
May 30-31: Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
June 13-14: Hungaroring, Hungary
TBC: Red Bull Ring, Austria
August 30-31*: Silverstone, England
September 12-13: Nurburgring, Germany
September 26-27: Le Mans, France
October 17-18: Jerez, Spain
