Defending Eurocup 2.0 champion Nyck de Vries will start from pole position for the second race of the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship opener at Motorland Aragon after a last gasp lap saw him snatch the top spot from race one winner Oliver Rowland.
British driver Rowland had looked on course for pole position to go with his win in the first race of the weekend as the chequered flag dropped, but final improvements from de Vries and Matthieu Vaxiviere would see the front row undergo a late change.
The highly touted Dutchman, who finished seventh in the first race, was just 0.024secs faster than Vaxiviere, who is in position to make amends for a disappointing Saturday when he couldn't convert pole position into anything more than a run to fourth.
Rowland kicks off the second row in third position, alongside his Fortec team-mate Jazeman Jaafar, while Pietro Fantin and Tom Dillmann make up the third row in fifth and sixth.
A podium winner in race one, de Vries' team-mate Dean Stoneman faces a task to repeat that feat from seventh place, ahead of Nicholas Latifi, Tio Ellinas and Alfonso Celis Jr. F1 driver Roberto Merhi, meanwhile, will start down in 18th place, while Meindert van Buuren – who was first across the line in race one before serving a 20secs penalty for a jump start – gets underway from 18th.
