Matthieu Vaxiviere set the pace during Formula Renault 3.5 first practice at the championship's fourth round in Hungary.
Vaxiviere, a two time race winner this year, was the fastest on track for Lotus, leading Strakka Racing's Tio Ellinas by just one tenth-of-a-second. Pietro Fantin, now into his third season contesting Renault's flagship series, was third fastest for International Draco Racing.
FIA European F3 driver Alex Albon, replacing Lotus' Meindert Van Buuren, finished an impressive fourth fastest in his first FR3.5 appearance while long-time leader of the morning session, Oliver Rowland settled for fifth - half a second behind the leader.
Rookie Gustav Malja was sixth in the second Strakka Racing model with fellow debutant Nyck de Vries winning the inter-team battle at DAMS for seventh. Nicholas Latifi, Tom Dillmann and Roberto Merhi, fresh from his turn in the Canadian Grand Prix, completed a competitive top ten.
Jazeman Jaafar, at the helm of a Fortec Motorsports challenger, did not set a time. The drivers will return to the track this afternoon for the final practice session of the weekend.
