The experience of GP2 veteran Johnny Cecotto will partner teenage rookie Vitor Baptista at new team RP Motorsport for the inaugural 2016 Formula V8 3.5 championship.
The news comes just weeks after RP Motorsport made their on-track debut in Barcelona for the first set of pre-season tests where Cecotto and Baptista competed for the Italian outfit. The recently confirmed duo will take to the track for the final pre-season test this weekend, exactly one week before the 2016 Formula V8 season gets under way in Aragon.
26-year-old Cecotto is the most experienced GP2 in the series' history with 114 starts to his credit. However, in this spite of this single-seater involvement, Cecotto's signing may come as a surprise after the Venezuelan announced his retirement from competitive motorsport with financial issues.
Alongside him will be 18-year-old Baptista, a champion of the EuroFormula Open in 2015 where he competed with the series frontrunners RP Motorsport. The Brazilian was also runner-up in the Spanish F3 championship in the same year.
In announcing this news, RP Motorsport is the sixth team to confirm a complete line up for the season opener next week. Beitske Visser will test for Teo Martin Motorsport in the hopes of joining Japanese talent Yu Kanamaru at the team while Strakka Racing, Comtec Racing and the returning force of Durango are yet to announce to single driver for their upcoming 2016 title campaigns.
