Matthieu Vaxiviere led Aurelien Panis to finish the first day of Formula V8 3.5 pre-season testing fastest for new team SMP Racing in Motorland, Aragon.

The Frenchman, now approaching his third consecutive season in the 3.5 litre category after a runner-up finish in 2015 – was fastest for the Russian outfit.

Arden Motorsport's Panis was close to dethroning Vaxiviere, finishing just five one-hundredths-of-a-second behind his compatriot. Meanwhile, at the helm of his AVF model. Tom Dillmann made it a 1-2-3 for France.

Egor Orudzhev finished fourth fastest in the second Arden Motorsport challenger with Betiske Visser fifth following a move from Strakka Racing to Teo Martin Motorsport for the final pre-season test.

Louis Deletraz was the fastest rookie for sixth with Yu Kanamaru, Pietro Fittipaldi, Roy Nissany and newly-confirmed RP Motorsport driver Johnny Cecotto Jr completing the top ten.

The morning session finished slightly early when Giuseppe Cipriani's Durango Racing Team challenger stopped at turn 12 with just moments left on the clock.

Matevos Isaakyan was at the helm of Vladimir Atoev's seat at SMP Racing for the test despite the latter's confirmation at the team earlier this year. Meanwhile, Strakka Racing, currently without a driver line up, were absent from the morning test but are still hoping to attend the first race next week.
