Carlin chasing podium in final race.

Carlin Motorsport are looking to end their frustrating season on a high after both Mikhail Aleshin and Robert Wickens secured themselves good starting positions for the final race of the season at Barcelona.

The team looked to be on course for both the driver and team titles midway through the season, but Sebastian Vettel's defection to Formula 1 kick-started a disappointing run of form that has seen them fall away in both championship fights.

Nonetheless, both Aleshin and Wickens were in the points in the first race of the weekend the Circuit de Catalunya, recording a solid fifth and seventh place finish, results that place them fourth and sixth on the grid for the second race.

It was a particularly good performance for Wickens, the Canadian enjoying just his second World Series race by getting comfortably in the points. The youngster is setting his sights even higher now though and is chasing a podium in the final race of the season.

"Mikhail and I seemed to have identical starts as we pulled away together, and I was quite surprised to see van der Garde pass us both. The first lap was good, my main aim was to stay out of trouble and maintain position.

“It wasn't a particularly eventful race, I had a small fight with Baguette after the pit stops, but that was it. The main aim today was to bring home some points, which we did. I'm aiming for a podium tomorrow so it will be important to get a good start as I don't think there will be many opportunities to make up positions in the race."

Team principal Trevor Carlin is also impressed by Wickens' performance, not least because he has little experience of the Dallara chassis and has never visited the Spanish circuit before.

“I'm impressed with the consistency with which Robert is performing, considering this is only his second World Series event. We're in a great position for tomorrow's race and we should be aiming for a podium. It would be a great reward for all the team's hard work over the year to end the season on a high."
