Pic holds steady for victory.

Charles Pic defied torrid weather conditions to romp to his maiden World Series by Renault triumph at Monaco, the 18-year-old doing so in front of an interested F1 paddock.

Having claimed a surprise pole position in qualifying, Pic took advantage of a relatively short race to lead home Giedo van der Garde, the championship leader extending his healthy advantage further with a second place finish.

Indeed, while van der Garde had hoped rain would come to spice things up at the start, the Dutchman's intentions were effectively scuppered when the decision was taken to begin under the safety car.

With no way to get a jump on Pic, van der Garde had to settle behind the Frenchman and cope with significant spray. Even so, Pic was still tackling the conditions better than his rivals, utilising a clear circuit to secure the points for fastest lap too.

Although van der Garde began reeling Pic in at the ten lap period of the race, soon after the race was under safety car conditions when Aleix Alcaraz crashed at Tabac.

Almost as soon as it came back in though, it was out again when Mario Romancini got it wrong at Massanet in front of Marco Barba and Pasquale di Sabatino. Although Barba managed to stop in time, di Sabatino was unsighted and hit the Spaniard, who in turn collected the stranded Romancini.

With damage across the circuit causing a lengthy safety car period, the race ended under formation, with Pic ensuring a landmark victory for himself, with van der Garde a frustrated second.

A rather dull race in which the only overtaking manoeuvre in the top ten came courtesy of Bertrand Baguette, it was a case of as you were at the finish line.

As such, Fairuz Fauzy got his Fortec career off to an excellent start with a first podium of the season for the British team. Julien Jousse followed in fourth for Tech 1 Racing's best combined result of the year so far.

Baguette moved up from sixth to fifth at the expense of Mikhail Aleshin, while Guillaume Moreau, James Walker, Miguel Molina and Maximo Cortes held steady from their qualifying positions to round of the top ten.
