GP2 refugee signs RC deal
1 January 1901
The World Series by Renault comes out of its summer sojourn with a subtly altered line-up following the revelation that RC Motorsport has agreed a deal with GP2 Series refugee Paolo Maria Nocera.
The reigning Italian F3 champion contested the early part of the F1 support series before parting company with BCN Competicion after finding that he lacked the experience to make inroads into the higher echelons of the grid, and has sat out much of the summer before finding a way back into competition in the WSbR as replacement for the budget-troubled Duncan Tappy
"I have followed Nocera´s career for a while now," team owner Cristiano Giardina commented, "He is a winning driver, as proved in F3, and his victory in the Italian Championship last year further strengthened our interest in him.
"This agreement for the second part of the season will give him the chance to acquire more experience [at this level], while offering our team a precious contribution for the development of our car."
Nocera got his first experience of the Dallara World Series car during a brief test at Vallelunga, and is looking forward to making his race debut at this weekend's Nurburgring round.
"I am thrilled by this opportunity," he enthused, "The World Series by Renault is a high-end championship that has a lot to give to a driver determined to achieve a career as a professional. I would like to thank RC team for the interest and trust placed in my potential. I will have to learn quickly, but that is just another reason to devote myself to the maximum and not disappoint the team´s expectations."
Although RC appeared on the official event preview with Tappy alongside Claudio Cantelli, it is understood that the Briton, who recorded the best result of his brief appearance in the series with sixth in race one at the Hungaroring, has run into budget problems and has had to step down. The reigning FRenault UK champion had earlier replaced Aleix Alcaraz from the Silverstone round.
