Kevin Magnussen and DAMS continued their run of form this season by claiming yet another pole position for the first race in Catalunya. It is his seventh pole of the season.

His team mate, Norman Nato, was one of his biggest challengers, keeping pace with the Dane. The two were separated by just six tenths during the early minutes of qualifying however the Frenchman dropped in form in the latter stages.

Will Stevens lines up alongside Magnussen with William Buller close behind; both driver have seen their form peak in the latter half of this season. They are expected to remain with the championship for another year.

Despite Stoffel Vandoorne's acceptance that qualifying was to key to catching his championship rival, he could only manage fourth. The Belgian replaced his tyres with 13 minutes remaining of the session in an attempt to keep pace.

Starting behind Vandoorne, Sorensen and Sirotkin start fifth and sixth respectively following last minute surges moments before the flag dropped.

Zeta Corse's William Buller momentarily held the lead following 11 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya before the consistency of Magnussen once again proved unstoppable. The Dane needs just five points to clinch the title this weekend ahead of fellow McLaren youngster, Stoffel Vandoorne.

Not as hot as yesterday's qualifying session, the wear of the tyres should be more controllable for the drivers though rain is expected to remain at bay. With no mandatory pit stop for race one, qualifying will determine much of the race outcome on Saturday.
