Meindert Van Buuren will contest the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 championship with Pons Racing, it has been announced.

The Dutchman's testing campaign was enough to secure him a race seat with one of FR3.5's most experienced teams. The series rookie is the nineteenth confirmed driver on the grid, just one week before the season opener in Monza.

Van Buuren spoke of his excitement as he joins the F1 feeder series following a year in Auto GP, where he finished ninth in the overall standings.

"I'm delighted with today's great news and I am anxious to be in Monza next week for my race debut in the Formula Renault 3.5", he said. "It has taken a lot of work, on the track and outside them, to get to this point, and I want to thank all my sponsors and Pons Racing for their confidence", he continued.

The nineteen-year-old furthered described his experience in pre-season testing with the Spanish outfit.

"The intense testing programme of recent weeks has been extremely useful and the progress made lays a good ground to build upon", he noted. "At Pons Racing I have found an extremely professional team and a perfect atmosphere. This will give us the possibility to plan things properly and proceed step by step", he added.

Pons Racing team boss, Emilio de Villota matched Van Buuren's sentiments, speaking positively of the Dutchman's performance in recent weeks.

"We are very happy to unveil the first part of our driver line-up and to have Meindert Van Buuren with us," he said. "We believe he has great potential that we will have the opportunity to develop over the near future.

"Pons Racing is delighted to have such a young talent in its ranks, and I am convinced Meindert can be among the top rookies as from this season", he concluded.

Van Buuren, Robert Visoiu and Tio Ellinas shared testing duties for Pons Racing in Jerez last month. The Dutchman's team mate is yet to be announced but confirmation of their complete driver line-up is expected in the coming days. Their 2013 drivers, Zoel Amberg and Nikolay Martsenko have joined AV Formula and Comtec Racing respectively for this upcoming season.
