Roberto Merhi will contest the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 championship with Zeta Corse, it has been confirmed.

A positive testing campaign with the Russian outfit was enough to impress his new team bosses. Indeed, Team Principal, Roman Novikov praised the series rookie, acknowledging that pre-season testing was the Spaniard's first single-seater drive in over two years.

"We are sure that we've selected one of the most talented junior drivers in the world for this role", he said. "We know that with his great speed and feedback, he will be a great asset to the team and he can be perfect Formula 1 material", he insisted.

Merhi's signing will see him return to the World Series by Renault for the first time since 2007, when he finished fourth in their 2.0 Eurocup championship.

"Right now I'm just look forward to Monza", he said. "I am really grateful for the opportunity I have been given by Zeta Corse and I am sure that they will provide me with a good car in order to compete at the front of the field", he continued.

Merhi expressed great confidence in his team and the challenge they could pose to the rest of the grid.

"The car is great, we were 1.5 seconds short of the F1 times in Jerez two weeks ago and, with the new regulations, it will be very challenging to drive it to the limits", he noted.

"There are many very good young talents in the championship so for me, it will be a hard task", he concluded, admitting that his FR3.5 campaign will bring its challenges.

The Spaniard's testing partner, Roman Mavlanov is expected to fill the remaining seat at Zeta Corse however this is subject to confirmation.

In 2013, Zeta Corse placed nine separate drivers at the helm of their cars but completed the latter half of the season with Carlos Sainz Jr and William Buller to finish tenth in the standing. Sainz Jr has joined defending champions, DAMS whilst Buller is partnering Pierre Gasly at Arden Motorsport.
