"It is an incredible feeling to win at home with all my compatriots who support me. It is a huge achievement", he said noting the strong fan presence in Aragon this weekend.

Despite his commanding performance, the nineteen-year-old remained grounded, aware that his home race dreams were almost ruined by a fast-starting Martsenko on the first lap.

"After a delicate start, where I honestly thought I would lose a few spots, I didn't expect the gap to increase so quickly, in as much as qualifying was very close" he concluded.

Sainz Jr's imposing victory has helped him extend his championship lead over the rest of the field. Driving with defending champions DAMS, he enters race two as the championship leader with series veteran, Martsenko 14 points adrift in second.
