After qualifying on pole position for race two in Hungary, Roberto Merhi admits he is targeting a hat-trick of Formula Renault 3.5 victories this afternoon.

The Spaniard is just 26 points behind his championship rival Carlos Sainz Jr and looks to close the gap with a run of great form at the full capacity Hungaroring. Zeta Corse's star driver won yesterday's race from seventh on the grid in mixed conditions.

"It should be easier to win than it was yesterday," he said. "The goal is go out and get a third race win in a row."

Merhi was the last victor in Germany before the two month summer break and has returned to action with style.

"We were always at the top and that's a good thing," he continues, noting his closely-fought battle with Sainz Jr this morning.

"The gap could have been bigger but I made a few mistakes on my last lap. It was still enough though."

After a strong showing in FP1 at Monza for Caterham, Merhi is now eyeing a 2015 drive, a feat winning the FR3.5 championship would certainly aid. The Spaniard is in his rookie season but is an experienced single-seater competitor having emerged from the ranks of Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.

Rain threatens to mix up the order this afternoon when race two begins at the Hungaroring.
