As the first day of Formula Renault 3.5 testing came to a close in Jerez, Pietro Fantin led the field for International Draco Racing.

The Brazilian's fastest time, which was set during the morning session, could not be surpassed with the hot conditions affecting tyre wear. Swiss racer Alex Fontana was the first rookie, out-pacing his more experienced team mate Matthieu Vaxiviere. The Lotus duo were second and third respectively for the Czech outfit.

Nicholas Latifi maintained fourth for Strakka Racing, two tenths-of-a-second slower than Fantin. The Canadian will join Lotus for second and final day of testing tomorrow replacing Fontana.

Luca Ghiotto and Beitske Visser, who both enjoyed a strong end to their 2014 seasons, were fifth and sixth. AV Formula's Visser secured a career best fifth at the ninth and final round in Jerez last weekend.

Rookie Jordan King and Oscar Tunjo were seventh and eighth while Dean Stoneman was the biggest mover in the afternoon, climbing from eighteenth to ninth. The Briton also led most of the afternoon session for Arden Motorsport but will move to Pons Racing tomorrow.

Meanwhile, at the helm of Carlos Sainz Jr's title winning DAMS, reigning Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup champion Nyck De Vries was tenth fastest in his first FR3.5 appearance. The McLaren junior will compete with the French outfit next year as they look for a hat-trick of titles.

After a difficult year, which included missing four FR3.5 rounds, Comtec Racing has not confirmed a single driver for the final day of testing tomorrow.
