2014 Formula Renault 3.5 driver Roberto Merhi will contest the annual Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix with Double R Racing, it has been announced.

The Spaniard, who returned to single-seater competition at the start of the year, will rejoin his former team with whom he achieved two race victories in the British Formula 3 Championship during a one-off appearance in July. Merhi finished third in the FR3.5 championship and is also a former Euro F3 Series champion in his own right.

"We can't wait for Macau, Roberto is an incredibly talented driver and although he hasn't raced F3 full time this year we're confident he's going to be a big threat," said team principal Anthony Hieatt.
"It's fantastic to have him competing with W66.com Double R Racing in this year's race, you never know until qualifying how the weekend will pan out but we're feeling confident of a good run."

Red Bull junior and Toro Rosso candidate Alex Lynn is the reigning champion on the streets of Macau but will not be defending his crown this year. Double R Racing last won the prestigious race back in 2006 with Mike Conway while competing under their old name, Raikkonen Robertson Racing.

"Macau, like any race on a tight and twisty street circuit, is all about qualifying so that's going to be a massively important part of the weekend," Hieatt continued. "If we can get that right, Roberto clearly has the skill, ability and pace to be a real challenger.

We're delighted to have partnered with W66.com for this year's race, hopefully we can all celebrate a successful result."

This announcement also comes following the 23-year-old's two free practice outings with Caterham F1. He joins the likes of 2015 Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen and Lotus junior Esteban Ocon with the latter recently enjoying two successful F1 tests.

The Macau F3 Grand Prix will get underway at the Circuito da Guia on November 13th.
