Roberto Merhi has joined Pons Racing for the upcoming Formula Renault 3.5 series, after finishing third in the drivers' standings last season with Zeta Corse.

The 23-year-old also enjoyed three free practice one sessions last year with Formula 1 team Caterham in Italy, Japan and Russia respectively. Merhi was tipped for a Formula 1 race seat with Caterham for 2015 before the team folded during the winter.

The former Euro F3 champion notched up three race wins in FR3.5 last season on his way to third in the championship. The Spaniard will join up with the team for pre-season testing on the 5-6 March in Jerez ahead of a second test in Aragon on the 30-31 March.

Despite his age, Merhi is a highly experienced driver having competed in Euro F3 (2009-2011), GP3 (2010), DTM (2012-2013) as well as last season in FR3.5.

The FR3.5 season commences with a season opener in Aragon on the 25-26 April.
