Nyck de Vries is closing in on a top three title finish in the 2015 Formula Renault 3.5 championship after a second place finish in race one at the Nurburgring.

The McLaren junior's points haul of 101 is just five points behind third placed Jazeman Jaafar with five races remaining. De Vries' fourth podium of the season came at the historic German circuit despite a two-place grid drop which carried over from the Silverstone round last week.

"We showed our potential in qualifying, but unfortunately we had to serve a penalty we received at Silverstone," he said. "I had to get a great start and we had very good pace, especially in the second stint."
