Prior to the first race at the Circuit de Catalunya, Kevin Magnussen told Crash.net that his "qualifying was probably enough".

The Dane needed five points to secure the victory and his prediction turned into championship glory in Spain when he was crowned champion in a dramatic race.

The safety car was deployed following an incident of heavy braking at turn one. Norman Nato, Nigel Melker, Marco Sorensen, Marlon Stockinger, Yann Cunha and Carlos Sainz Jr were all forced to retire. Magnussen remained out of trouble to lead from the front, followed by Stevens and Vandoorne who jumped one position to third.

When the safety car returned to the pits with 30 minutes and one lap remaining, Magnussen extended his lead by one second over Stevens who had a further two second gap to Vandoorne.

Despite the best efforts of his team, and following an early pit stop, Andre Negrao retired from the race. Arthur Pic and Sergey Sirotkin later added to the long list of casualties from race one.

Kevin Magnussen did not attack the race but merely controlled from the front, wanting to avoid any further incidents. However, the pace of the DAMS man could not be ignored and by lap 16, the Dane had set a fastest lap stamping his authority over the rest of the field.

Time ran out for Stoffel Vandoorne who could not close the gap to Stevens in front. Ten seconds separated the Belgian from the new series winner with five minutes remaining. On a circuit notoriously difficult for overtaking, Antonio Felix da Costa overtook William Buller despite a heavy lock up.

All incidents occurred behind Kevin Magnussen who breezed to his first Formula Renault 3.5 championship with one race remaining. Reports now link the twenty-year old to a seat at Marussia in place of Max Chilton, something the Dane refused to neither confirm nor deny upon questioning.

Magnussen's father, Jan, could also be crowned championship this weekend as he aims to become winner of his class in the American Le Mans Series.
