Victory Engineering are out to continue their solid start to the season when they return to the streets of Monaco for the fifth round of the World Series by Renault.
The Italian team have shown consistent speed this year with Giedo van der Garde and Charlie Kimball at the wheel, even if the previous round in Germany failed to live up to expectations when a first corner accident eliminated the fourth-place starting Dutchman.
Nonetheless, Kimball managed to score some points in the second race to move Victory up to seventh in the team standings as they prepare themselves for the annual jaunt around the streets of Monaco, a track familiar to van der Garde, but new to Kimball.
“I'm so excited about racing in Monaco,” the American said. “Obviously it will be very different to all the other tracks we visit throughout the season. It isn't a typical circuit and qualifying will be very important.
“We will have little time on track before qualifying and the race, so I'm especially pleased that we came away from Nürburgring with a better understanding of the car. I've never been to Monaco, let alone raced there, so I'm looking forward to that. It will be a challenge, but I'm sure it will be a blast!”
For team manager David Lowe, qualifying is likely to be more important than the race itself as they seek a good position early on in order to utilise Monaco's famous lack of overtaking spots to hold on for some points.
“Monaco is a very challenging circuit and is made even more demanding by the lack of track time. A good qualifying position is essential here and with only one short practice session before qualifying on Saturday, it will be important to be on the pace quickly.
“This is a demanding race for the entire team, the drivers need 100 per cent concentration and with no room for error, a mistake on track can often mean extensive repairs for the team.”
