After a difficult debut campaign in GP2, Christian Bakkerud has secured a deal to drive for Super Nova in the new GP2 Asia series.
The Dane saw his season hit by a multitude of problems, including a back injury that left him sitting on the sidelines for a number of races, and was unable to secure a single point while driving for DPR.
However, just two days before his 23rd birthday, Bakkerud has now agreed a deal that will see him take up his place on the grid with David Sears' team in Dubai in January when the new Asia series kicks off.
“I'm really pleased to have secured a deal with Super Nova for the GP2 Asia series,” Bakkerud admitted. “The team have a great pedigree in GP2 and before that in F3000 and we know they have the experience and resources to compete for podiums and wins. This is a great opportunity for me and I am really looking forward to continue to work with them.
“My goal is clearly going to aim for podium finishes and race wins. I have learnt a lot in my first and very troublesome season in the GP2 series but I am ready to move on and prove myself in a different team environment. Things are finally falling into place and I can assure you that I will grab this opportunity with both hands!”
Team boss Sears said he was thrilled to secure Bakkerud's signature for the new season, adding that he was confident that the Dane will be able to get the job done.
“I think that Christian has slotted into Super Nova very well and he has demonstrated that he is a genuine team player,” he said. “We want to give him a real opportunity through testing and the GP2 Asia series drive to demonstrate his true potential in the main GP2 series for 2008.
“Obviously having endured a character building season in 2007, our main focus initially is about restoring Christian's confidence in himself which we feel is already improving during the first couple of days of testing. We enjoy working with Christian and we want him to finish winter testing with a smile on his face and with some much better results than before.”
