Mike Conway proved his ability to keep his head under pressure as he surged to a dominant maiden GP2 victory, the Brit prevailing despite two safety car periods that wiped out his lead.
Determined to recover from a disastrous feature race when a certain podium finish was ruined after a collision with Javier Villa on the last lap, Conway made the most of his reverse grid pole position to go unchallenged through the 30 lap sprint.
Although his Trident team-mate Ho-Pin Tung effectively worked as a buffer, Conway needed little protection as he rocketed into a massive lead in the opening laps. Although two ten-second plus leads were undone by a pair safety car periods, Conway was still able to romp home an 18-second winner.
Marking his first win in the series – as well as Trident's fifth – Conway was delighted to prevail over the disappointment caused after Friday.
"I just can say I'm really happy,” the former British Formula 3 Champion said. “This is my first win in the GP2 Series, and it's great how it came right after the disappointment suffered at the end of yesterday's race. Everything was perfect since the start, and I proved to be able to control the situation at all points, before and after the caution.
“The car was perfect too, allowing me to keep a really fast pace. In addition to the personal accomplishment, I think today's result will be boosting our confidence for the rest of the season.”
