Ex-Arden man signs up for Superleague

GP2-refugee Yelmer Buurman will keep himself busy over the coming months after securing a deal to race in the inaugural Superleague Formula with PSV Eindhoven.

Buurman switches to the burgeoning championship, which will combine the intriguing ethos of motor racing and football, having been forced out of his drive with Trust Team Arden in the Formula 1 feeder series.

Joining compatriot Robert Doornbos on the grid for the first round to be held at Donington Park next weekend, Buurman has already tested the car at Barcelona and Vallelunga.

The team will be overseen by Belgian outfit Azerti, run by former GT racer Wim Coekelbergs. They will also take charge of the efforts for United Arab Emirates club Al Ain.

Speaking ahead of his debut, Buurman is delighted to be competing for a Dutch club, while he is also looking forward to getting to grips with the unusual race format.

"I think it is going to be a really interesting series - especially with the reverse grid. Other series have reversed the top six or the top eight, but never the entire field. That will be a big challenge," Buurman said.

"There will obviously be a lot of pressure - suddenly every PSV fan will be a supporter of mine so I have a very big responsibility."
