Rodriguez boosts FMS at Monza

Fisichella Motorsport manager Paolo Coloni has pronounced himself happy with his team's performance in this season's GP2 Series, despite finishing a relatively lowly tenth overall in the standings.

The team, which is overseen by Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella, had high hopes heading into the European season after a strong outing in the preceding Asian Championship, but several driver changes left them playing catch-up for much of the year.

Indeed, after losing Asia Series front runner Adrian Valles following just one round, FMS conducted much of the season with the driver line-up of Roldan Rodriguez and Marko Asmer.

While BMW F1 tester and reigning British Formula 3 Champion Asmer has struggled to get settled with the car, Rodriguez at least showed flashes of speed, namely at Monaco when he a managed fourth place finish.

However, it was at the team's home race in Monza that he really gave FMS something to smile about as he held on for a sixth place finish in the feature race before translating that into a second place in the sprint.

Although it was only enough to cement 15 points and tenth in the overall standings – one place lower and 21 points less than in 2007 -, Coloni was nonetheless thrilled to end the year on a high.

“I'm actually pleased and feel we have had a very good end to the season in both (FBMW included) championships. I was very happy with the performance of the GP2 car and it was a fantastic end to the season to see Roldan on the podium.

“We have finished the season in a good position with a good car and that will carry us through the next tests and put us in a good position for the GP2 Asia championship.”
