Van der Garde joins iSport

Newly crowned World Series by Renault Champion Giedo Van der Garde will race for iSport International in the upcoming GP2 Asia Series, it has been announced.

The Dutchman has dominated the World Series this season with fellow Norfolk-based team P1 Motorsport, wrapping up the title in Portugal last weekend having led the standings from the very first race.

He will now graduate almost immediately to GP2 where he will race with 2007 Main Series Champions iSport as they bid to topple last season's winners ART Grand Prix.

Joining Bahraini driver Hamad Al Fardan in the team, Van der Garde is delighted with his new home, even hinting that this could prelude a deal to race in GP2 in 2009 too.

"Obviously I'm extremely pleased with this promotion," he said. "The GP2 is an important series when your target is Formula 1. I really have to thank team boss Paul Jackson and Gulf Finance House, the team's new sponsor, for this opportunity and I can't wait to get behind the wheel.

“We furthermore took an option to stick with the team for the GP2 Main Series, so let´s hope all goes well in Asia.”

The decision to race in Asia means van der Garde will likely skip the final round of the World Series by Renault as the season finale in Spain clashes the GP2 opener in China. As such, this likely to harm P1 Motorsport's aspirations of lifting the Team crown against Tech 1 Racing, Ultimate Signature and Prema Powerteam.
