Monteiro confirms GP2 team plans

Tiago Monteiro has admitted he is in talks to become the owner of a GP2 Series team in 2009, but stresses no formal deal is ready to be announced.

Reports have linked the former Formula 1 driver to buying out struggling Spanish outfit BCN Competicion, which is reputed to be the least funded on the grid and is currently the only one of the 13 teams that hasn't won a GP2 race yet.

The Portuguese driver, who scored one podium finish in two seasons of Formula 1 racing, has now confirmed he is in talks to become a team owner in 2009, but he insists it is not a done-deal.

"To cross over to the other side of pitwall and head the undertaking of a project such as this is very stimulating for a driver," the former Jordan and Midland F1 driver said.

"It means that I will need to find partners as well as sporting and commercial solutions that will guarantee that the company can be competitive. But even if the negotiations are well advanced, it is important that everyone understands that nothing is finalised."

Monteiro currently races in the World Touring Car Championship with SEAT. He heads to the final round of the season in Macau classified 12th in the standings with two wins to his name.

BCN yesterday claimed they are hoping to announce the commercial deal by the end of the month.
