Yoong: I have no intention of leaving

Alex Yoong insists that he is determined to see the end of this season's GP2 Asia Series, despite enduring a tough opening double-header at Shanghai International last month.

Responding to a story that appeared earlier in the week, Yoong told Crash.net that rumours suggesting that he was considering turning his back on the series were inaccurate, and that he was committed to helping My Team Qi Meritus Mahara challenge for the teams' title in only its second GP2 campaign.

The Meritus operation countered suggestions, first, that Yoong had said he would turn his back on GP2 Asia and, second, that the Malaysian was upset that rookie team-mate Earl Bamber had been quicker than him in China, while Yoong himself admitted that, despite having some speed problems on the straight in China, he had no interest in walking away.

"Yes, there was some speed problems in China, but we were not the only team who had problems," the former F1 pilot insisted, "In fact, compared to the rest of our rivals, I think the team did exceptionally well considering it was our first race of the season.

"I have no intentions of leaving GP2 Asia. It is a challenging series and I'm happy to be part of the championship. I have great faith in the team, the car and my team-mate. Our goal is to win the team championship and I strongly believe we are on the right track."

Yoong, Bamber and Meritus will be back in action for round two when the series resumes in Dubai in early December.
