F1 » Button: McLaren can make small step forward in Monaco

Jenson Button: We'll continue to chip away at the performance of the MP4-28 until it's capable of challenging at the front; there's no other agenda for a winning team like McLaren.

It's fairly obvious that Mclaren have'n t got a handle on their new car yet, all the talk of analizing data and checking this and that suggest they are along way from sorting things, Button's words only go to support that theory, Button was brilliant at Monaco a couple of years ago but this year they will be lucky to get in the top ten, remember him being stuck behind a very wide Caterham last year. They have to get on the first two rows and I believe that is beyond their current capability.

ot. I would give them more credit than that. don't forget, the lousy tyres will still be in use, so there may be more opportunities to get a car back into relatively clean air. but oddly pirelli are forecasting a single stop? at least, that is according to sky f1 show.

because Monaco is more on the brakes than the throttle I would have to say Mercedes stand a good chance, if McLaren are indeed having issues with their aero, I cant see them doing any better than average, especially seeing where Lotus, RBR and Ferrari are. Nico and Lewis should fly around this track, and Mercedes did get provisional pole last year with Schumacher.

The worst thing in life or f1 is getting lapped in Monaco because you have to be dead slow to let them pass... Whats the point getting pole when you are going to drop like a stone to earth.... Unless they lock up both row1 but Lewis normally sleeps during the start.. he should top hanging with Mark Webber who also sleeps at the start off...

Prof, I do enjoy your technical updates, last week we had "more fuel consumption means more power" or some such nonsense. Now we have "Monaco is more on the brakes than throttle"
Monaco has never been hard on brakes! Think about it, slow speed track needs traction not brakes or aero!

I think your theory of it suiting Lulu is based on you being a fanboy who's willing to grasp any straw that you can find.

Taipan, the proper way to say it is, the more power (output) means more fuel consumption which in turn translates in more weight, but Monaco is not a power track.
In my opinion the Mercedes situation in Monaco will be more or less the same.

do you know about potential energy Taipan?

Monaco is supposed to be the lowest consumer of fuel among the tracks in F1 right now. Ergo, the cars will see less of a deviation in max fuel vs limited fuel, so it will be easier even fro Mercedes to get the balance of their car figured out. Now, Raikonen, is pretty handy, Mark is good around Monaco, so is Nico, so pole for Lewis is not in the bag, but this track is not going to hurt the Merc, and infact, Lewis should be the difference with the front tires, all he needs is Mercedes to give him level support with his teammate.

McLaren have almost no chance of getting anywhere at this track, I dont even think they will qualify in the top 8, Mercedes will fight for the win, if they manage a good qualifying, and Lewis doesnt have any setup issues like he did last race.

Prof X, are you serious when you question the support level Mercedes gives to Lulu?
What set up issue did Lulu had in the last race?
I believe that the Mercedes cars will still be the hardest hit with the tyres issue at Monaco

PCX Before the Spanish GP your belief was that Merc would block any passing by ruining the cars behinds aero efficiency and Lulu would win. The truth is he went from 2nd to 12th.
Now we're getting, all Lulu needs is backing from Merc and he'll win in Monaco because he'll make the difference with front tyres.
Lets be honest here, you'll use your imagination to come up with a story why Lulu should win ever race of the season, because you are a fanboy and logic just doesn't come into it.

ty. pcx (prof x) does have a thing about lulu! but yes, lulu is hard on tyres, particularly front , and brakes too, judging by barca. but due to his new found skill of going backwards, I wonder if maldo in a Williams will t bone him when going past at the hairpin?

interesting analysis on sky the other night....ferdi used his kers whilst still taking corner three at barca, to get himself past the others. good control!
