Hulkenberg: It was just tough luck

1 January 1901

Nico Hulkenberg found himself unable to fight for a double win in Dubai after traffic hit his hopes in the latest sprint race of the GP2 Asia Series season.

The ART Grand Prix driver had won the first ever GP2 race under lights with his victory in the feature race but made a number of errors early in the second race of the weekend – including running wide across the grass while fighting for position.

Despite battling his way up to fourth place, he was stuck behind Arden's Edoardo Mortara and by the time he managed to battle past his former F3 Euroseries rival, the chance for victory had gone with Sergio Perez and Vitaly Petrov clear by nearly ten seconds.

“It was pretty tricky out there today,” he said. “For me, there was more sand and more dirt on the track tonight which made it a little bit more difficult. I was also struggling from my front left tyre. Especially, I was really close to Mortara in the high speed parts that made it even more difficult. That's why I was struggling a bit and running a bit wide onto the grass.

“But finally, I passed him and got into P3. The Campos guys were quite far away and I wasn't seeing anyone in my mirrors. It was a quiet race for me from then on.

“The difficult thing with Mortara is that he had quite a good traction in the last corner that is followed by a really long straight. There you need to find a way to actually fight this and it took me a couple of laps to do it. It's too bad, but it is still a good result.”
