Parente goes quickest in Barcelona test

Having trailed Lucas di Grassi on the first day of testing around the Circuit di Catalunya, Alvaro Parente turned the tables on his rival in Barcelona with dominant performance on day two.

Already impressing at the wheel of the new Ocean Racing Technology car, formerly BCN Competicion, Parente was the man to beat throughout the day, topping both the morning and afternoon sessions around the circuit where he scored his maiden GP2 win last season.

Clocking a best lap of 1min 26.948secs, Parente was one of two drivers to break the 1min 27secs barrier to be three hundredths of a second up on day one pace setter di Grassi.

The Brazilian was once again on fine form at the wheel of the Fat Burner Racing Engineering car to run Parente closely in the quicker morning session, even if he was 1.7secs adrift in the afternoon.

Asia Series front runner Davide Valsecchi continued to show that he intends to make Durango a regular GP2 front runner this year with the third quickest time, ahead of Formula 3 Euroseries and World Series by Renault champions Nico Hulkenberg and Giedo van der Garde, the latter in particular picking up the pace for former champions iSport to leap up to fifth position.

Lap times were typically close with the top eighteen drivers all covered by a second, while there would seven different teams inside the top ten.

Doubling up first was Ocean's second driver Karun Chandhok in sixth place, the Italian matching his team-mate Parente by being classified in tandem with a Racing Engineering car, this one belonging to rookie Dani Clos in seventh.

Ex-Trident and Piquet driver Pastor Maldonado continued his top ten form for ART, ahead of DAMS' Jerome d'Ambrosio and Super Nova's Luca Filippi.

Elsewhere, James Jakes' hopes of being the only Brit to secure a GP2 drive this year received a slight boost as he posted the 19th best time, ahead of prospective DPR team-mate Michael Herck and two seconds quicker than he managed on day one.
