Doru Sechelariu will compete in the inaugural GP3 Championship with Tech 1 Racing, it has been announced.
The Toulouse-based team will enter three cars in GP3 one of which will be driven by the 17-year-old, a young gun from Formula BMW.
“Doru Sechelariu is the first driver we've announced officially for our GP3 programme,” explained Simon Abadie, the Tech 1 Racing team manager. “He's very young and this season his aim will be to fight at the front at this new level.
“He's proved his speed and his capacity to work, and we're delighted to welcome him to Tech 1 Racing. The real aim of this formula is to train young drivers and that's what we're going to do with Doru.”
The first official GP3 test session will take place at Paul Ricard at the beginning of March and by then Tech 1 Racing is aiming to have announced the names of the other two drivers for its first season in the championship.
“We're giving this new car an in-depth examination at the moment,” added Abadie. “Our first deadline is in March with the first collective test session.
“Between now and then we'll announce our other two drivers, which we hope to do in the near future.”
