Six drivers were handed grid position penalties for Saturday's GP2 Series feature race in Abu Dhabi after they failed to heed the red light and drove out of the pit-lane when the circuit was closed at the end of the sole qualifying session.
Dani Clos, Jules Bianchi, Pastor Maldonado, Sam Bird, Jerome d'Ambrosio and Giedo van der Garde all earned themselves ten-place penalties on the grid, with Clos, Bianchi and Bird all damaging their chances of taking second in the point standings from Sergio Perez.
Clos, who lies fourth overall and qualified second fastest for the feature race at Yas Marina, said that he planned to stop his car in the pit-lane when the session was over, but was indicated by marshals to continue to the GP2 pits. He was shown that the car was not allowed to be stopped in the pit-lane and followed other drivers finding themselves in the same situation. All passed a flashing red light while exiting the pit-lane to get back to the GP2 pits.
"After the session, several drivers, including myself, were penalised due to a confusion with the marshals in the pit-lane once the session was over," Clos lamented, "It's a shame as we were in a really good position to attack. Now we have to see what tomorrow brings.”
