Cecotto Jr. joins Fauzy at Super Nova

Super Nova Racing signs Johnny Cecotto, Jr. as their second driver for the 2011 GP2 Asia series alongside Fairuz Fauzy.
Super Nova Racing has completed their 2011 GP2 Asia series driver line-up by announcing the signing of Johnny Cecotto Jr.

"I am very, very happy to be working with such an important team in international motorsport," said Cecotto Jr. "My target is the top three and I am confident that we can achieve this."

21 year-old Cecotto Jr. is the son of Venezuela's 1978 motorcycle world champion Johnny Cecotto, who went on to compete in 23 F1 Grand Prix races in 1983-4.

Cecotto Jr. - who races under a Venezuelan license but was himself born in Augsburg, Germany and has dual nationality - has been in single-seat racing since 2005 when he first competed in Formula BMW ADAC, Formula Junior 1600 Italy and the FR2.0 Italia Winter Series. He has competed in both German and British Formula 3 series and in the International Formula Master in 2007, before switching to GP2 in 2009 with DPR and in 2010 with Trident.

Cecotto Jr. also competed in last year's GP2 Asia series with Trident, but scored only 3pts with two points positions in the season opener at Abu Dhabi, and finished the championship in 17th position. His stint in the main series was no more successful, similarly scoring only 3pts by virtue of a 4th place in the Monza sprint race. He finished the 2010 GP2 main series in 23rd position.

The press release from Super Nova Racing conceded that Cecotto Jr. had experienced "a troubled season" in 2010, but added that "Johnny again showed his ability at GP2 level" during the year.

"We are very happy to welcome Johnny Cecotto into the team for the GP2 Asia Series," said team boss David Sears. "He is an extremely talented young driver with the potential to deliver some excellent results as part of the Super Nova family."

Notably the deal only extends to the end of the GP2 Asia season and does not automatically mean that Cecotto Jr. will keep the seat into the main GP2 season starting in May. Super Nova Racing said only that the team "is confident that his talent can be realised in GP2 Asia and hope that this relationship can be carried on into the Main Series."

The team announced earlier this week that Lotus Renault F1 test driver Fairuz Fauzy would take the other race seat at Super Nova for both GP2 Asia and the GP2 main series.
