Vietoris tops practice as Gutierrez crashes out

Christian Vietoris topped the times with a late fast lap, but it was Esteban Gutierrez who captured the attention with a big accident that brought out the red flags early in free practice.
Weather continued to dominate proceedings at Istanbul Park, as a wet GP2 practice followed the similarly rain-afflicted F1 first practice session on Friday morning in Turkey.

Just as happened in that F1 session, this half hour practice was littered with spins and offs as drivers battled with wet kerbing and aquaplaning around the circuit. And just as happened in the F1 session, there was a red flag briefly stopping proceedings.

That was the result of Esteban Gutierrez going off at turn 9 after straying onto the kerb and getting thrown off track and onto the inside wall, before rebounding and finally coming to a stop in the middle of the track with considerable damage to the car for the Lotus ART team to attend to before qualifying. His team mate, Jules Bianchi, almost added the team's workload with his own near-replay of the incident but he escaped merely clipping the barrier.

Giedo van der Garde set a new fast time with eight minutes remaining, and for a time it looked as though that would be the best time of the session with drivers looking like they were conserving wet tyres for later sessions over the weekend. But instead there was a new flurry of fast times, with Christian Vietoris finally laying down the best time of the session with a 1:43.399 a minute before the end, two tenths quicker than Romain Grosjean with van der Garde pushed down to third by the time the chequered flag came out.

Jules Bianchi, Max Chilton, Dani Clos, Stefano Coletti, Luca Filippi, Fabio Leimer and Marcus Ericsson rounded out the top ten.

Qualifying starts at 1:55pm British time, 3.55pm local time in Turkey.
